Thành phần hóa học nguyên tố của thép không gỉ chủ yếu bao gồm Ferrum (Fe) và Crom (Cr), các nguyên tố hợp kim khác trong thành phần hóa học còn bao gồm Carbon (C), Silicon (Si), Mangan (Mn), Phốt pho (P), Lưu huỳnh (S), Niken (Ni), Molypden (Mo), Titanium (Ti), Nitơ (N), Cuprum (Cu), v.v. Chỉ khi thành phần phần trăm Cr đạt đến một giá trị nhất định thì thép mới có khả năng chống ăn mòn. Do đó, kim loại thép không gỉ thường có hàm lượng Crom tối thiểu 10,5%.
